House Training a Puppy

House Training A PuppyIt’s time to fetch your new puppy, the excitement is rising and the whole family is abuzz with anticipation. Now starts the long and hard road to house training a puppy.  This is the time you need to ensure that your puppy knows not to mess in the house, and that he learns what the backyard is for.

The Old Fashioned Newspaper Method

Many people still use the old fashioned newspaper method when house training a puppy. You can do this by placing your puppy in a confined area with newspaper.  Slowly reduce the amount of newspaper until the puppy has one sheet. Many have found this to be a highly effective method.

I used to use this method myself and found that my puppy would run around in a panic often choosing the morning newspaper we were still reading, but he had the right idea.

If your puppy messes anywhere in the home and you catch him, reprimand him with a stern “no” and take him and place him on the newspaper. This takes a lot of patience, but eventually he will realize that if he goes on the paper he gets a happy voice, which means he’s obviously pleasing you.  This is important because dogs want to please their masters.

Eventually you can start moving that one piece of newspaper towards the outside door. Move it a foot or two every day.  Be careful that you  don’t move it so far each time that your puppy can’t find it. Keep moving it until it’s outside in the yard. When this happens, you can be confident that your house training has been successful.

Crate Training

A lot of people now use the crate training method for house training a puppy. It is common knowledge that an animal will not mess in its bed unless it has no choice and this is where you have to be very careful with this type of training.

You need to ensure you take your puppy outside before locking it in the crate, wait for him to do his business and then place him in his crate. Keep in mind that you can’t leave a puppy without toilet access for too long. As soon as you open the crate, take your puppy outside again to relieve himself.

This process will take time and needs to be done in conjunction with the positive reinforcement method which is going to be mentioned in our next section.

Crate training is very effective when it comes to toilet training a pup; it also is a useful place to put your puppy to keep it out of harm’s way when you don’t have time to watch it.

The Positive Reinforcement Method

The positive reinforcement method has become a popular way in house training a puppy. When you bring your puppy home, take it into the yard, place it on the grass, and tell it a code work (I used to use, “Go wee wee,” which was embarrassing when people were around so you may want to use something less obvious).

While using a happy tone, continue to repeat the bathroom code word to your puppy. It is very important that you don’t play or fuss with the pup at this stage because you are both here to do work, not play. As soon as the puppy does his business, praise him with a happy voice.  The happy tone tells your puppy that he has done right, that his action has pleased you.

Using this method is very effective, but you need to repeat it at least every hour. Puppies have small bladders and can’t wait for too long.  Taking your puppy out every hour and giving him the bathroom code word, waiting and then praising when he does his business will result in his knowing where he must go to relieve himself (outside, not in the house). It also stops any accidents from happening in your home.

There are some downfalls to this way of house training a puppy.  Some dogs are so obedient that they won’t go unless told to later in their lives, so you need to be aware of this.

Overall there are simple ways to ensure your puppy is able to know where he should and should not go the toilet.  Regardless of which housebreaking method you choose for your pup, be sure to be consistent.  Consistency and frequency when training will keep your house clean, and depending on the breed of dog, it can be done quickly and efficiently.
